Opening Letter

Letter from the President

Dear Friend of the Family,

It is hard to believe that November is almost over and that we are only two days away from Thanksgiving! I sincerely hope that you are surrounded by family and friends as you celebrate all that you have to be thankful for.

I know that I personally have much to be grateful for.  I have the privilege of being married to a wonderful woman and of being the father to three amazing children. I am also incredibly thankful to be able to work on your behalf to fight for justice and truth in our state. It is such an honor to be able to put my time and effort into causes that are close to my heart, most namely, life, marriage, and the family. In light of this, I wish to express my thanks to YOU for your interest and continued support that has allowed us at the Maryland Family Alliance to effect change in these areas around the state of Maryland. YOU are making a difference in our state!

In this newsletter, I would first like to update you on the initiative to repeal DOMA (the Federal Defense of Marriage Act) by the Senate Judiciary Committee. The Senate Judiciary Committee voted to pass the bill to repeal DOMA which means that the bill was sent to the Senate floor to be voted on by the rest of the Senate body. Although they are now saying that they do not have the votes to pass this repeal, it is important that we continue to take action. Please be in prayer that the federal government stands up for marriage and please go to this link to send your US Senator an email today!

Secondly, I’d like to share a recent victory we have for marriage in California. The California Supreme Court has ruled unanimously that the proponents of the Proposition 8 initiative (which defines marriage as only between one man and one woman) have the legal right to defend the initiative in court. This is a major victory for the Prop 8 Legal Defense Fund and the lead Prop 8 attorney, Chuck Cooper. Had the Supreme Court not agreed with the backers of Prop 8 that the Proponents have the legal standing to defend the initiative; it is very likely that the ruling of Judge Walker who overturned Prop 8 would have gone unchallenged. So what happens next? Presuming the Ninth Circuit accepts the answer it got today that the proponents DO have standing, they will issue their ruling determining whether the definition of marriage as the union of one man and one woman violates the US Constitution. Please be in prayer that the Ninth Circuit will uphold Prop 8 and will stand for the true definition of marriage!

Thirdly, I’d like to share with you our urgent need to continue to pray and take action concerning marriage in the state of Maryland. It seems that almost daily, I hear of another story in the news of a religious group or individual who is negatively affected by a redefined marriage law. In every state that has allowed same-sex “marriage”, Catholic Charities has had to close their doors as an adoption agency because they would not allow same-sex couples to use their services. A town-clerk in New York, Rose Marie Belforti, has received much persecution from the same-sex marriage advocates because, as a Christian, she could not validate a same-sex marriage. Even as she sought to propose a compromise, the gay-rights groups refused to listen and made her the target of an aggressive attack campaign.

So often we hear the argument that “my gay marriage will not affect your straight marriage”. Yet, I see daily proof that this is completely and totally FALSE. If the state recognizes that a same-sex marriage is equal to traditional marriage then by this very fact, everything is affected. Marriage is a public, not private act that the state recognizes and honors and if the state redefines marriage then it makes a public equation of the two unions. The examples above show us that far from simply being a compassionate affirmation of a loving union, redefining marriage to include same-sex couples erodes the very freedom to practice religion that our country was founded upon.

There is a great article in this newsletter that details the effects of redefining marriage upon our religious freedom and I encourage you to take some time to read it. We have to see that there is an agenda at work here and that this agenda will stop at nothing until it has taken all public religious freedoms away from us as Americans. If I as a Christian cannot practice my beliefs in public, then my belief system cannot be fully lived out. If the state forces me to do what is fundamentally against my beliefs, then it has failed to protect my freedom.

ps. In this newsletter, you will find information on a Christmas Gala for Marriage, a new website put out by the US Catholic Bishops that includes great information on why we defend the traditional definition of marriage, an article that details the impacts of same-sex marriage on our religious freedoms, and finally a few stories of those who suffered for standing up for their beliefs.

The Impact of Same-Sex Marriage on Civil Society

Religious freedom involves more than the private practice of religion. It also involves the right to freedom of thought, conscience, and religious belief; and the right to speak and act in accordance with those beliefs both in the work place and in the public square. This article shows how the redefinition of marriage to include same-sex couples impinges on our basic right to religious freedom
