Maryland Ballot Question Redefining Marriage is Released

Dear Marriage Supporters,

Urge everyone you know to VOTE AGAINST QUESTION 6 this November.

As I’m sure you know, on Monday Maryland’s Secretary of State released the ballot language for the same-sex marriage legislation that will redefine marriage for all Marylanders unless it is overturned by the voters.

Proponents of the law claim the ballot language reflects the measure’s supposed religious freedom protections for those who believe marriage is the union of one man and one woman.  This claim is misguided and ignores the fundamental reason to reject this measure.

The definition of marriage is given to us by our nature as human beings, and supersedes government and religious institutions. Redefining marriage will undermine the family structure for all of society, and strip from law a basic recognition of the vital role that mothers and fathers together play in the lives of children.

Moreover, what the new law pretends to offer as religious protections, it then takes away in language that the Secretary of State has failed to include in the ballot question.  According to the actual legislation, religious organizations that accept any sort of state or federal funds are excluded from religious liberty protections.  They are not exempt, and there are no protections for businesses or individuals.

Please note: people will not be voting no, they will be voting "For" or "Against" Question 6. The Conference and the Maryland Marriage Alliance will be updating our materials to note this change and recommend that you begin using “AGAINST” instead of “No” in your conversations. It is a small distinction, but very important to eliminate confusion at the polls.

Please continue adding your marriage volunteers into our volunteer system at:  We need everyone involved as we gear up for the last 70-odd days of the campaign.

Also, while the Maryland Marriage Alliance is creating a new website, please send electronic donations to them at:   (Donations to the Maryland Marriage Alliance are not tax deductible.)

Marylanders should not be fooled into thinking we can redefine marriage and still protect religious liberty.  We urge them to vote against Question 6 and to uphold marriage in Maryland as between one man and one woman.

Thank you.
