Dear Friends,

California Bill AB-460, which will be heard on Tuesday, April 30, would require insurance companies to offer infertility coverage that includes gays, lesbians and the elderly. No medical diagnosis is required to establish infertility, only a determination that the couple has had sexual relations for more than a year without producing a "live birth." The bill does not specify that the relations must be heterosexual. Because this is bizarre, it is easy to give into temptation to ridicule, but there is a more important principle that must be the focus of our advocacy effort. Does anyone have a right to create a children through a sperm or egg donor which consequently deprives them of knowing and being cared for by their mothers and fathers.

This is a practice that has gone on for too long and must be ended. It may surprise you but ending artificial reproduction with egg or sperm donation is part of the goal of our Stand with Children Movement which supports the right of children to be born into families with their mothers and fathers united in marriage.

Stand with Alana

Alana Newman, founder of Anonymous.org is a victim of this practice with feelings of abandonment by her sperm donor father, identity issues, and feelings of being treated like a commodity. She courageously represents tens of thousands of other victims who are coming of age and searching for their fathers. Read her compelling testimony, which she asked Catholics for the Common Good to submit on her behalf. I will be going to Sacramento to offer personal testimony.

ACTION

The hearing is at 1:30 PM on Tuesday, April 30 in Room 4202 of the State Capitol Building.

  1. If you live in the district of one of the Committee on Health members listed below, please call their office and ask them to vote no on AB 460. Ask them to not expand the practice of creating children with sperm and egg donors, which intentionally deprives them of the right to know and be cared for by their mother or father or both.
  2. If you live in the greater Sacramento area, please come to the hearing if you can. There will be a time when opponents of the bill will be offered an opportunity come forward to state their opposition to the committee. Ask them to stand with Alana and vote NO on AB 460.

This hearing and vote is just the first step for this bill. If passed, it will go to the Assembly floor, and then on to the California Senate where it will receive another committee hearing. This is just the beginning. It is important to start spreading the word and asking others to join you in opposing AB 460 and the practice of creating children with the intention of depriving them of their moms or dads or both.

Please pray for Alana and thousands of children similarly situated. Also pray that enough momentum develops in opposition to this bill as it makes its way through the legislature so it is defeated and the public becomes aware of the consequences for children created through sperm or egg donation.

"Marriage unites a man and a woman with each other and any children born from their union." "Recognized in their own ways throughout time by every culture, state, and religion, this is what marriage is. It is not a matter of faith, but a human reality. It is God's plan for creation, but is independent of belief in God."
